GHANA

The cultivation of cocoa in Ghana is concentrated in the tropical forest zone south of the Volta River and extends across the entire width of the country. The region benefits from ideal climatic conditions and an environment conducive to the development of the cocoa tree. The main harvest begins in October and concludes in January.

HISTORY

It is believed that Tetteh Quarschie was the first person to introduce cocoa cultivation to Ghana around 1870, coming from the neighboring island of Fernando Po. Following the success of his initial efforts, he distributed pods and seeds to his friends and family, who also embarked on cocoa cultivation. Soon, other planters followed their example. Cocoa would thus become one of Ghana's most exported products.
