Episode 13 - The journey of cacao

Cacao was first consumed by the indigenous people of the Amazon, who collected cacao pods along the banks of the rivers and brought them to their settlements to eat and share with their families. They used to eat a cacao pod the way you would eat a mango or peach. But how did the cacao tree become domesticated, how was it spread to other continents and how did it become the commercial product we know now?

Eduardo Somarriba, a Specialist in the development of agroforestry systems with cacao, explains the journey of cacao in this key episode of the Cocoa Documentary.
